Artist's Comments

I designed and built this railing for a private residence. The house was being renovated into an arts and crafts style and needed a railing that would feel very fluid and counterpoint the straight lines of the post and beam, as well as maintain a very clean look. The posts and all wood-work is by HR Pacific.

This was a challenging project because the posts were already installed when I was fabricating the steel parts to fit between them. Also, I only have very basic equipment to bend 1" round bar with, but enough heat and one can do anything with steel :)

Careful measuring and fitting allowed all the pieces to slide almost effortlessly into place - no "encouragement" from a hammer required! The steel has been left bare, as the clients like it that way, though I would rather treat it a bit for a more even finish.

And yeah, I know it's not to code, (as lots of people who've seen it seem to need to point out), but that is one of the joys of working for a designer!

thanks. I really didn't know if it would work when I started, but I'm pretty pleased with the result.

Lovely railing friend,
The excessive code requirements in the [link] instilling beauty a tremendous challenge, and few people here are willing to accept the liability of a rail such as yours. Know that you are extremely lucky to have found such a client ,as this piece will certainly remain a standout in your portfolio for years to come. It is important because it gives clients evidence of another albeit unusual course for aesthetics to take in a private home. To make beauty of more importance than debilitating rules. Everyone she see examples like this...If I had unlimited resources and felt so buttressed by my wealth as to give short shrift to excessive codes, what an expansive and exhilarating environment I could create...

ah, very cool work. Solid 1" stock huh? that must be pretty stout, code or not! I suppose that would be how to do it, rather than tubing that might kink.
Anyways, fantastic work.
Cheers!
