double plate photo etching
AP 1 of 2, 2007

For Bosnia:
the colours I used for this plate are, to me, welcoming and bloody at the same time. Definitely influenced by the sadness and memory of bloodshed that lingers in Sarajevo.

This series began with a photograph I took in Sarajevo on the former Snipers' Alley. I converted it to several exposures on acetate film, then 2 ImagOn plates, then paper. That really makes it sound so simple *sighs*

I couldn't have lined up the plates without Davida Kidd's super-foolproof-registering-technique. She's a print goddess!

This is very impressive. how did you manage that stencil like quality with a etch?

:iconcuivielin:
mmm, not sure what you mean. do you mean the level of detail?
:iconangeldumottschunard:
well yeah, I work a lot with stencils, and it looks a lot like a stencil. And that look is hard to achieve with an etch. I don't know if i can explain what i mean. if you look through the stencil gallery here on deviant you might see what i mean.

Oh well it looks really good and really that's all that matters.

Having looked at your gallery, I see what you mean about stencils. One of my films had a darker exposure, and the shadow areas etched out completely (my developer was too strong), so I used the effect to a happy advantage with the colours. In this case, my first plate (lighter exposure, properly etched, with full detail) was red. The second plate was inked in brown, and all the shadow areas that are red was where the ImagOn was eaten through.

A case of happy accidents! I hope this answers your query :)

Tell me this wonderful technique? I'm always struggling to get plates aligned!

I will happily share that with you, I just need to think about it for a bit - it's been a while.
:iconeimhin:
Please do share? I'd love to know and be able to partake of this professorial genius.
