Cast aluminum, acrylic patina, wax

2008

A one of a kind vessel (the cape piece is the lid). Cast aluminum using the lost styrofoam technique, where the form is created by carving building polystyrene, packed in sand, which gets burned out by the molten metal.

The lid was inspired by sea slugs with their gills sticking up from their backs. The bottom piece was a deliberate emulation of a vessel by Thom Lynn, a dear teacher of mine.

(I can't help but see my cat Pigeon in the speckled part of this piece. She is rather portly and bottom heavy when sitting.)

**EDIT**
Here's a story my friend told me when I asked her what this piece made her think of:

He's a little creature that lives in the ocean by Antarctica, and he's the only one in the world, except for one other. She lives in the Arctic Ocean.

Every few years they make a journey across the seas to find each other, walking with their little feet along the ocean floor. Sometimes they swim by fluttering their capes to avoid the deep dark trenches.

At last they meet in the middle of the seas, where they can forget their lonliness. Unless, of course, they both go in the same direction, ending up at each other's poles where they sing and flutter in sadness until they give up and go home.

Right now I just have the two photos, but eventually want to get a shot of it with the lid off to show the two pieces.

wow, when I first saw this piece I thought "why is this listed as metal work?" because I thought it was ceramic!! it's so organic!!

Thanks! I really had to work carefully to keep the patina so delicate. I was definitely trying to avoid the Technicolour look so often seen with painted metal. It just wouldn't have worked for this creature.

Interesting you should think it was ceramic - several people have made the same comment, both on dA and in the gallery where it was shown. I rather like that ambiguity :)

It looks to me like a flower. A flower from the depths of the vast sea, maybe:) Great job, you're really skilled in this:D
